Jesus wasn't talking about everyone
when he declared that the Son of man came to save that which was
lost. The context of the declaration was the parable of the lost
sheep (“sheep” singular in number). (Matthew 18:11-14)
Jesus wasn't conceding failure when he
declared that none of them was lost but one. He was identifying the
one he came to save. (John 17:12)
Can't we confess that the Son of man
saved him? Can't we confess that such a Son of man came in the flesh?
If not, then shouldn't we count
ourselves among the many who had already come into the world when
John wrote his epistle? (2John 1:7)
I offer these ideas only in my own name.
